The place Pulicat in Tamil Nadu is famous for its very large Lake measuring up to 60 Km and 17 Km wide bordering Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh on the Coromandel Coast of Bay of Bengal Sea in the East. Pulicat in Tamil is Known as Pazhaverkadu and located in Thiruvallur District. This place is around 60 km. to the north of Chennai and reachable by National High Way No. 5 passing via Andhra Pradesh. It is supposed to be the second largest salt water lake in India, separated from sea by the Barrier Island of Sriharikota in Nellore District of Andhra Pradesh and major part of the lake is in the regions of Andhra Pradesh and smaller Islands in Tamil Nadu. Pulicat Lake is fed by the rivers of Arani River, Kalangi River and Swarnamukhi River. Sriharikota, the Island has the Satish Dhawan Space Centre, named after the first Indian to fly to space orbit and also the Centre is famous for the launching of various Indian satellites into space. Pulicat lies approximately 13o North and 80o East on the Global Map. Fishing is the main occupation and Elavur, Sullurpeta and Dugarajupatnam are the two major towns of Pulicat. This area is also famous for the bird sanctuary with more than hundred species of birds migrating and breeding here. This lake is also famous for fish breeding and rearing of prawns and other fishes for export. The Pulicat Lake was greatly affected by the 2004 Tsunami.

Pulicat history dates back to 1st Century by mentioning of the port of Pulicat on the maps of the early seafarers. As this was natural sea port on the Eastern side of India and was ruled by local Tamil Chieftains and VijayaNagar rulers. There were many history of migration of people with different religious backgrounds and from different European Countries to Pulicat right from 13th Century by the Arabs to Portuguese in 16th Century and then ruled by the Dutch people in 17th Century.
