Bombay High Court also known as Mumbai Uccha Nyayalaya is one of the oldest High Courts of India. The Court takes over jurisdiction of Maharashtra, Goa, and the Union Territories of Daman and Diu and Dadra and Nagar Haveli. The Bombay High Court also constitutes its regional benches at Nagpur and Aurangabad. The first Chief Justice, the Attorney General and Solicitor General were appointed from this court. Since India gained Independence in the year 1947, 22 judges have been appointed as judges in Supreme Court and 8 of them were Chief Justices of India. The Bombay High Court was established in the year 1862 and is authorized by Constitution of India. A judge in the Bombay High Court is free from the services at the age of 62 years. The present Chief Justice of Bombay High Court is Mohit S. Shah. Around 3.4 lakh civil and criminal cases are handled by the Bombay High Court in a year. The Court recently marked the celebration of 150 years of its commencement. An exhibition was organized showing prominent artifacts, documents and historical articles which was inaugurated by the C M of Maharashtra Mr. Prithiviraj Chavan. The occasion was graced by Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh on 18th of August, 2012.
