History and Meaning:
The word Chikkaballapura is derived from “Chikka” meaning small, “Balla” meaning units of measuring food grains and “Pura” means town. Thus it means in olden times, the inhabitants of this place used to measure the quantity of food grains by weighing as the place was basically known as an agricultural region. Initially this place was called as “Chinna Ballaporum” which originated from Telugu word.
Initially the ruler of Avathi Malla Byregowda’s daughter was hunting in the dense forest of Kodimachanahalli, where she came across a rabbit that stood fearlessly before a bunch of hunting dogs. Seeing this incident, the king told his daughter that the boldness of the rabbit was due to the strength of regions citizenry. Thus the king sought the permission of the ruler of Vijay Nagar and constructed a strong fort and formed a city now known as Chikkaballapura. But later the place was taken over by Hyder Ali which was later conquered by Tippu Sultan. In the year 1791, a fierce battle took place between Tippu Sultan and British troops, where lot of casualties occurred from either side. Finally Tippu Sultan was defeated and the place came under the rule of the British. There after Chikkaballapura came under the Wodeyars of Mysore who took the administration of the place and they clubbed it with the Karnataka State.
